How do we leverage the Rock Hall Induction in Cleveland - Identi-fyi has a few ideas

The PD just posted that the Rock Hall induction ceremony will be hosted in Cleveland in March of 2009. Thoughts on how we could leverage this event to get even more attention on the City and region? Identi-fyi has a few…

  1. Hospitality: Are you not able to score a ticket because you don’t rep Madonna or you aren’t the newest punk-rock “it” band. Let’s throw an even bigger party than the one attached to the ceremony for the rest of us who are just fans. Local bands, catered by the Iron Chef himself, the ceremony on big screens, and zero possibility of getting into a fist fight with Kid Rock.
  2. Music: The world’s largest “try-out” contest could be set up all over the region. Invite every talent scout, YouTube cameraman, and the major labels to hear up and coming acts in the home of Rock and Roll. Classical musicians at the CIM, back-to-back rock bands at the Agora, and now that the plumbing is fixed we can invite the country crowd back to Cleveland Browns stadium.
  3. Business: A “trade-show” of sorts catered to the business of music. How does marketing play a role in the success or failure of a group? Do bands still use “reps” or are they branching out into the world of image management firms? How are concert tours planned and implemented to achieve a successful mix of promotion and profit?
  4. Fun: For the three nights leading up to the event there could be events all over town where you can party like a rock star. Fly into Cleveland, hop into your limo, and paint the town green with your money while you enjoy the best music, food, and entertainment that Cleveland has to offer.

How would you propose that we leverage this event?

This is a great idea and a way to build some momentum on “alternative/micro conventions” that do not necessarily need a convention center. It could be a “Sun Dance of Rock” where new talent could be found on a recurring basis. There is a lot that could be done to tie business and entertainment together here.

For starters I would put together an adhoc group to do some preliminary brainstorming and recruit “Rock Star” bloggers to Cleveland to help push the event (JoshSpear.com, CoolHunting.com, etc.). Have the new Convention Bureau flip the bill for the bloggers to come before the event. I know they would and this would help expose Cleveland on the web in an inexpensive, expansive and viral way.

Thanks for the comment Jay. I love the thought of the “Sun Dance of Rock.” In what ways could we create the avenues for this to be a grass-roots driven effort vs. being run by one of the local economic development groups? Anyone have any thoughts?

I think these are great ideas! It’s important to show the rest of the country that we support what we have here, and to illustrate why the induction ceremonies should ALWAYS be held in Cleveland.

Wouldn’t this also be a great time to show off the other fantastic things we have here? It would be awesome to somehow have special shows or celebrations around that time at the Museum of Art, Severance Hall, etc.
